CCCconfer Overview of Project 12/2011 (includes student mentors across the state)

CCCconfer lunchtime webinar 1/30/12 (Short, one hour overview of project)

We know that a great number of students struggle with college-level mathematics, which has been correlated with poor progress through community college programs.

According to the December 1, 2011 report of the California Community Colleges Student Success Task Force, “Of the students who enter our colleges at one level below transfer-level in Math, only 42 percent ever achieve a certificate, degree, or transfer preparation".

In an attempt to explore interventions with potential to impact student success in mathematics courses, The Smartpen Math pilot project will include math classes in 20+ colleges statewide. The project is providing  teachers of mathematics with support in the form of student mentors as guides, implementation strategies, and the Echo Smartpen to make digitized notes accessible to students.

The ultimate goal of the project is to demonstrate a positive impact on students' abilities to learn, and their progress through college.  Because we are collecting data, aspects of how the Smartpen is used needs to be similar across classes.  We are strongly encouraging all instructors to do the following:

ON DEMAND MATH INSTRUCTION USING THE SMARTPEN

  • Include information about Smartpen/Pencast support in syllabus

  • Create a minimum of two practice *Pencast quizzes or tests, with solutions to problems.

See example of Pencast practice quiz

  • Provide a minimum of five Pencasts demonstrating how to solve problems of the types many students have difficulty with in math classes.

See example of "Using a Number Line"
