Smartxt Math Pilot

Smartxt student mentor helping other students use computers

The Smartxt team of students and instructors is expanding its resources to Math.

Math is no longer just "practical" but is a gatekeeper that keeps students from graduating. As math has been identified as the most challenging subject for first-year community college students, Smartxt approaches this problem with an outside the box paradigm.  Similar to learning a foreign language, success in math requires emersion and practice.  Our Smartxt Math Program uses multimedia and multi-sensory tools to engage students in the learning process.

Over the next year, the Smartxt Team at Laney will work with several Community Colleges throughout the state to develop and launch our Smartxt math model for the California Community Colleges. The program includes:

  • Introducing instructors to FREE on-line math textbooks.
  • Converting math e-textbooks into a text-to-speech platform.
  • Annotating e-textbooks with instructor’s problem solving strategies.
  • Creating an instructor/student support loop encouraging instructors to embed problem solving strategies into the text based on student need.
  • Empowering students to translate instructor’s embedded strategies into student tutorial videos.
  • Exploring new ways to engage students.
  • Creating an online course assisting students with Smartxt support tools.

The Smartxt math program will support a shift in learning by enabling students to use multimedia and multi-sensory tools to collaborate, practice, demonstrate and provide their knowledge to other students.  The ultimate goal being to engage students in the learning process, help students help each other, reduce math anxiety, and ultimately improve student success in math courses. Once the math model is complete, Smartxt will create a packaged Smartxt Math program for the California Community Colleges.
